I'm just getting back into nursing. I'm eight classes away from my BSN. My plan was to finish my BSN and get a year or two of med-surg experience before getting into HH. Do any of you feel that is adequate? I love being independent. Are you having to drive around with other nurses? Do you make more or less than a staff nurse would make on a med-surg floor? Can some of the paperwork be done at home on a computer instead of going to the office? Any other advice would be appreciated!! Thanks.

Congrats on your progress toward your BSN. I too am 8 classes away from mine! If you have been out of nursing for a while there will be many changes- you'll manage fine but may feel a little out of it at first. I took two years off when my kids were little. I remember when I went back SMA's disappeared and became CMP's and BMP's. Now we aren't supposed to use the abbreviations qd, tid, bid, etc. There will also be changes with pumps, etc. which are used more and more in the home. Again, nothing you can't learn quickly but it may take a while to get your skills back. If you have some med-surg nursing experience from your past you should have enough good gut nursing skills to do fine in home health. I always take paperwork home with me. Some agencies have the nurses use laptops but we don't (I'm glad). I just spread out my papers in the middle of the living room floor when everyone has gone to bed. For the most part I think hh nurses do a little better moneywise than in the hospital.

This is off subject, but I have seen SMA on license plates around here. I can't figure out what that stands for? Can you enlighten me?
