How difficult is it to transition from a med-surg nurse to an ICU RN?

Published

How difficult will it be? I decided to just settle for a med-surg, Telemetry rn position at nearby hospitals now since I was not fortunate to be hired for any critical care RN residencies/ internship.

I would like to know in terms of the technical aspects if working in the general area will basically keep me in there??? Like after a few years in the general specialty, can I just apply for any critical area position like trauma, icu, ER, ...

I really like critical areas, but now I can't afford to be picky anymore. I need to find work very soon cause I'm broke. Lol.

I'm just afraid that if I work in med-surg, then I'll be stuck there. I Especially worry when I look at job searches and the *requirements for any ER and icu position always say "must have 1/2 years experience in ER or icu or whatever specialty...

After 1-2 years, do I apply for rn residencies / internships for critical areas? I'm just anxious and worried. This year alone I've faced so much rejection from soooo many job screenings. It's the worst type too since I would go for 2nd and 3rd meetings and get told "HR will give you a call" which I don't even get at all. After dedicating the time and energy... it sucks but I am a optimist and persistent but now I kinda starting to feel it cause I'm broke lol... sigh...

Any advice?...
