How competitive is it to get into Navy Nurse Corps?

Published

What is the competition like to get into Navy Nurse Corps? I am 29 y/o, a fairly new RN that has been working at the VA here in Birmingham for the past yr on a med-surg floor. Out of all the branches that came to "recruit" us during nursing school, I was most interested in the navy, and working for the VA has motivated me even more. (2 of my coworkers just joined Army Reserve and kept telling me to join, but I don't really picture myelf as an army girl! lol)

I just applied for an SICU job here, so hoping to get critical care experience, at least for a yr. I'm hoping that I can start thinking seriously about the navy within this yr, get all my ducks in a row so to speak.

Anyone with any advice?

I don't know how competitive it is to get in, but I just found out my application was approved for the Navy Nurse Corps (pending a couple of medical items). :) I have two years of nursing experience. Many applicants are fresh out of school, so just about any nursing experience is a plus.

Talk to a medical programs/officer recruiter. They can help get the process going. It can take a long time to get all the paperwork done so gather up information now, i.e. references, background check info, personal documents, etc. Also, if you are not already excercising on a regular basis start doing so now. There are physical fitness standards for the military and the better shape your are in when you join, the better off you will be.
