Hi,
I am a RN with a 4 year degree (I also have 2 other bachelor degrees). Out of school for over a year (December 2005). Passed the Canadian (Feb 2006) and American NCLEX (July 2006). I never worked as a nursing assistant or grad. nurse (probably my biggest challenge to overcome).
I live in Minneapolis ... not too sure how hot the market is for nurses.
I am a Canadian but have authorization to work in the States.
I'd appreciate any insight.
Thanks

In my opinion, you should have no trouble getting a nursing position.
The question is: Will you be able to get the nursing position that you want?
Depends if the place of business wants someone with experience, specific type of experience, or will take an entry level nurse. Being a year out of school, and not having worked as a nurse before (if I understand you correctly), they may require you to take some type of refresher course (like is offered if you fail the boards).
My ideal place to work would be in an acute care hospital setting ... what are the odds?

There shouldn't be a challenge at all. I have never had a problem finding a job anywhere as a staff nurse. Since you are just starting out I would recommend a teaching/university hospital.
They are usually on the leading edge of technology that you will be using for the next 20 years of your nursing career, and you also don't get the superior attitude that you might encounter in private hospitals.
Put out several applications and interview with a couple then pick what you want. Good luck. The best part of nursing is that you are never out of a job.

I live in Minnesota too and am just a student, but every so often I scope out what's open around here.
Check North Memorial or Fairview websites - they have TONS of jobs...as does the U, as does Abbott Northwestern. You really shouldn't have a problem.
Good luck!
