How can you tell if nursing is a good fit for you?

How do you know if nursing is right for you? I am coming from a background of marketing and business, and am just unsure of how much I will like the actual job. I will say that I am really enjoying what I'm learning in anatomy class, and I'm getting good grades so far. I think part of my concern is that I will get through nursing school and then hate it. :nurse:

I think its really about how you feel about people....that may sound weird but its true, do you really want to help people? could you deal with someone dying in your care, could you physically and emotionally deal with very disturbing trauma's, injuries and events you could see and deal with every day?

I've known i wanted to be in the healthcare field since i was little, I grew up watching the show Emergency 911....it was my favorite show as a kid, which is weird, but i loved it, i loved seeing these people being injured and these doctors, and nurses and ambulance drivers saving their lives when it looked like all hope was lost.

Now i watch Trauma: life in the ER constantly, as well as all the other Medical shows on Discovery and TLC.

However, going to school is my only option, I've tried getting a job at a hospital but never could because i didn't have the "qualifications"

But, i've also had a passion for helping animals, and have became a Dog Groomer (which is odd i know) but i love it, i've been doing it since i was 16 and although im scared to give it up for nursing, I know that nursing is what i really want to do in life, and i'm not giving up that dream.

Yikes - stop right there. You love what you're doing..... What we go through is NOTHING like what's on TV. Please read the posts. Stay with the animals. You're dream is not reality - - sorry.

Sorry I didn't elaborate with my post cosmicsun, but watching those shows is not what makes me want to be a nurse, and what you "go through" has nothing to do with it either.

I want to be a nurse to help people, i have the emotional and physical abilities to deal with it and if you've never worked with pets like I have before you have NO clue! what I go through. People and paperwork are one thing, battle scars and the pain associated with the job is unbearable most of the time, but i have a passion for it.

I did want to work in Child Psychology, volunteered at a lot of places, even got my associates in Psychology before realizing that I could accomplish a lot more as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I've talked to several before choosing that career path and I am much more passionate about THAT then Grooming.

I actually want to be a Pediatric Critical Care Nurse Practitioner. Helping children with life threatening illnesses and trauma is my passion in life, it always will be and no one will ever change that, so you telling me that i don't know what you go through and to give up is just a waste of your time, sorry you hate being a nurse because you go through SO much, but i'm never giving up!

Double Yikes! NP isn't the same as a floor nurse, but you might have to work the floor for a few years! Good luck. I'd watch who's toes you step on, however. Really - it's very cut throat. Just my humble advice - you don't have to take it.

Hmm, okay. I am just feeling so undecided about this nursing thing. One day I will feel really excited sort of like I have found my calling and then I start having all of these doubts like can I deal with the bodily fluids, or will I be able to do the job well? I am not worried about being able to make it through school, it's sorta like what happens after I finish?

What was the appeal of nursing that inspired you to get into nursing school to begin with?

This is my fear too. I am 41 years old and just starting school this summer. I'm so scared that I am going to take a bunch of classes to get into the nursing progam and then hate it. I decided to sign up for the CNA program. It is an 8 week course at my school. The program will be over by the time summer school starts. If I hate the CNA program I will know nursing is not for me and change my major.

Exactly why I completed a CNA program last summer.. I have never worked as a CNA, just wanted to take in the experience to get somewhat of a feel of what it might be like... and I really enjoyed it!
