How Can I get my RN or BSN quickly UMSL or STLCC?

Published

I am finally able to start my pre-reqs. I had to stop because of financial issues but now Im registering for classes. I read a great post by someone who said they took their first two years at STLCC (pre-reqs) and then tranfered into UMSL Accelerated program. And now will have a BSN in 3 years! This sound like the perfect approach for me, but I have to be very careful with my finances and I think I may have to go the ASN route first. I am starting literally from scratch I have no credits. Is it possible to get my ASN in 3 years? I have been told it will take FOREVER if your starting where I am. I have heard so much Non sense I was just about to give up Nursing and just get a BA in something else, but I LOVE Nursing. Please give me some advice. I have two kids and a full time job to work around as well. But I am very determined to get this done as quickly and frugally as possible. Thanks everyone.:typing

I am taking the route of taking pre-reqs at STLCC-Meramec and then transferring to UMSL (applying for Accelerated BSN soon *fingers crossed*). Time wise UMSL is the better choice. It will have taken me 3 years on pre-reqs (although I took several unnecessary ones because I wasn't sure at the beginning if I wanted to go into nursing) and then if I get into UMSL it will be 4 years that is took me to get my BSN. You could probably get the ASN in that amount of time at Meramec. The waiting list is at least 2-3 semesters long but I've heard people say it is longer. An advisor told me I might not start until Spring 2011...I would be almost done at UMSL in that time span! Someone in my A&P class just got on the waiting list and she is number 250 or something. They only accept about 65 I think. Money wise though, STLCC is the better choice (presuming you don't want a BSN). UMSL's Accelerated BSN is around $30,000. I plan on scholarships and loans to pay for it. I was like you awhile ago, weighing the money versus time. But I figure I can be done with my BSN in a shorter amount of time then getting my ASN. You just have to weigh the pros and cons of each. Hope this helped a little! Good luck!
