How to ask for a new advisor?

Published

My advisor rarely responds to her emails and hasn't been very helpful to me. Is there a way to ask for a new advisor?

Not without looking like a problem imo. I'm sure others will write in to advocate for yourself and that you are entitled to XYZ but in my experience it is invaluable to fly under the radar. Find someone else to answer your questions if they can't wait. Who knows what the deal is but in one experience I had it wasn't what it initially appeared.

I had one who initially frustrated me but turned out to be one of my favorites. She was working a ton of hours at her practice and this was a side job. Her grading was very slow which in general really gets on my nerves. In an effort to gently document my concerns I emailed her that I wasn't concerned about being a straight A student or in a hurry to get my grades back as long as I wasn't going to be in jeopardy of failing. She told me it wasn't going to be problem, it wasn't and the things I learned from her during our brief interactions over the course of my program were very beneficial. She was an actual clinician! Imagine that? Not a book worm with a snazzy degree who never left the hallowed halls of her ala mater to actually lay hands on a patient. I have to respect and make allowances for that.

Thanks Jules! That was helpful and I agree with you :)
