The should affect your entire nursing practice, unless you view yourself as performing tasks only without thinking. How can you interpret lab results without understanding biology and chemistry to some degree? Good health is homeostasis - that is just another word for balance. How to achieve balance requires constant learning on your part. As for stats, insurance companies are moving towards creating standards by which nurses will be paid. This is already evident with the core measures agenda through Medicare. Standards are based on research. If you do not understand how to interpret research that applies to your nursing practice you will have a handicap. Knowledge is never wasted. Consider this, if your loved one had a choice of two nurses, one who was up to date on topics affecting his/her practice and the other who focused on doing tasks, which would you prefer??
