Houston Texas

Does anyone have any travel experience in Houston. I am a first time traveler and plan to find my own housing with a fellow travel RN. Any suggestions on companies with opportunities in Houston is also appreciated.

Specializes in LTC, Med/Surg.

I'm looking for my first contract and wanting to go to Texas, as well. If you hear of any companies that have alot of opportunities there, let me know. Thanks and good luck!

Specializes in NICU.

I don't know your specialty but there are a lot of NICU jobs in Houston & all of Texas right now. Pick the agency you are interested in working for & see if their web site also lists jobs. You can also google: travel nurse jobs Houston Texas & see postings. I will be starting a contract on Houston in January & also worked there for a year in 2009. I liked it & it is a fairly easy city to find housing in. If you are willing to live in the suburbs & commute, your housing shouldn't be expensive.

The VA in Houston has used MedSurg and Chemo travelers in the past. The problem is it takes several months to get through the credentialing process.

I went to texas childrens in Houston and that is by far the best assignment I have taken so far. The hospital is fantastic and HUUUUUUGE!!!! its such a good facility to add to your resume. I traveled there with American mobile. Had no issues and everything went smooth. However, I chose to find my own housing and wish I had done more research. I ended up finding a place near the galleria called Park at Voss and that was a nightmare. The price was right buuuuuut the area sucked! I'm a single woman with a cat and definitely didnt' need to be living there. Don't live there!! If you can take a flight or drive there first and ride around looking at apartments please do that first. Or get a friend you trust to look for a place for you. Its definitely manageable. I had so much fun in Houston. So much to do every day of the week. You'll love it if you go to Texas childrens'. I'm sad I left.

I traveled to Katy, TX which is about 20 minutes outside of Houston. I loved it there! We drove to Galvestine Beach a few times which is about 1.5 hours south. We used a company by the name of Traveler's Haven for housing and they put us in a very nice fully furnished apartment on the 10th hole of a golf course with 2 pools and fitness center. We could be in downtown Houston in about 40 minutes depending on traffic. The nursing company we use is Liquid Agents Healthcare. Not a very well known company yet but I have been with them for a year now and have had no problems. Their home base is in Plano, TX and they have a lot of assignments in TX.

Specializes in Pediatrics.

I'm in Houston now, at Texas Children's. Yup, this place is huge. I searched Craigslist (I know, kinda scary) but have been lucky and found furnished rooms for rent, it's really close to the medical center area also.

The only issue with travel jobs in Houston (as I've been told) is that the hospitals use a "middleman" so the rates are a bit lower as another part of the pay goes to pay this go between. That said, pay still not awful, and I finally get to experience Houston.

DixRN, if you're still in Houston and want to meet for a coffee or drink sometime let me know, would be nice to meet another traveler.
