Housing at University of Michigan?

Published

Hi Everyone,

I'm planning on trasfering to the U of M Nursing program in the fall of 07'. I have been wondering about the housing over there.

Another student that went there told me that the students that were in the nursing program (not all but a majority) lived in apartments right around the medical facility so that did not have to walk far to get to their nursing classes and so that they kind of lived in the same area together.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Does anyone know what area it actually is or what the apartment complexes are called and the cost?

And also does anyone what date is a good time to expect to sign for an apartment.

I'm just seeing ahead and it would be desirable to be with some companion nursing students. Yeah..

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!!

Here's an AWESOME resource for Ann Arbor apartments:

www.wa3hq.org

Click on the link that says "Renters, you can now search our members rental housing availabilities." You can limit your search by price, bedroom, location, etc. and what I found most helpful is the map function with each listing that shows you right where the property is located. One note: the School of Nursing is listed on their map as St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital, since the SON is located in the old St. Joe's building (yeah, less than 1/4 mile from UMH... go figure). Anything listed on Ann, Catherine, Lawrence, N. Division, or N. State will be close to the SON.

If you're up for dorm life, any of the "Hill" dorms will be in reasonable walking/biking distance. Couzens Hall will be the closest (lived there my freshman year, VERY nice), Stockwell (women only) and Markley are about equally far from the SON, with Alice Llyod and Mosher-Jordan in-between.

Any other questions, feel free to PM me!

If you have a car, definitely ask about the parking situation when searching for apartments. I live off campus but go to the nursing school, and parking on the street around there is impossible during fall and winter (plus, there are sometimes "snow emergencies" where you can't park on the street in winter).

Did you find a place? If not, it's worth checking out the ICC at UM. That's the Inter-Cooperative Councils. If you like the concept of coops, it's great. I lived in several houses through my time at UM. If you don't or think, "well maybe I can tolerate it" it's not for you.

You have a big like-minded community for support and it's the cheapest game going. You also have the cleaning, food shopping and cooking done for you with 'way less work time on your part. It used to be 4 hours a week. I don't know what it is now.

It was the only way I could have afforded to go to UM. A real life saver. And I met my husband there!

Fall/Winter

2007 Fall/Winter average price for a Central Campus "room only" is $343 per month. The average additional monthly cost is $175 for all utilities, amenities, and all the food you can eat!*
