On average, how many hours of sleep do you get before a shift?

I already voted... I get about 7 hours of sleep.

About 8. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.

That's a lot more than what I hear from other nurses! I try to come home and have some kind of life before going right back to sleep to do it all over again the next day. HAHA.

Oh, btw, add your 8 hours to the poll. :)

I work 11p-7a and lie down for 2 hrs before going in. Sometimes I sleep, sometimes I don't. Usually I sleep 4 hrs or in the a.m. following my shift

definitely 4 when I get home in the AM - sometimes 6 if the kids are in school. Then in the evening depends on what I get in the AM - so between 2-4 in the evening.

I'm lucky to get about 5 to 5.5 hours between night shifts because I commute 70 minutes each direction. Before my first night shift I usually get 7 to 8 hours.

5-7(considered a luxury amongst the night shifters I work with), except on my first night shift of the week and that one is just a couple hours nap during the day(but I sleep a normal night the night before.)

Tried to vote 3 times. I use the an app on an iphone & it doesn't seem to support voting through the web view option.

I always get at least 8, many times 9. I refuse to cheat myself on sleep! I want to be fully alert while at work, and I find that I have more energy and think clearer when I get plenty of sleep. I work 8.5 hour shifts, with a 10 minute commute, so it is easy to accomplish this. Back when I worked 12-14 hour shifts, and drove farther to work, I would be sleep deprived. After falling asleep while driving (twice) I will not work 12 hour nights anymore. I will work 8 hour nights on occasion, but with the 12's, you simply don't get enough sleep. When my kids were still living at home, my house would be spotless, dinner cooked, etc., but now that they are grown and gone, I prefer to sleep, house be darned!

I go to bed around 11 and usually wake up at 7:15 so around 8. When I worked in the hospital, however, and had to work weekend nights I would sometimes go Friday morning to Monday morning on 8 hrs of sleep total.

When I worked 12s on day shift I would usually only get 4 to 5 hours. After I switched to nights I get 6 to 7 hrs.

I need an "other" option.... I usually sleep in on the day before I go in to work (I work all my shifts in a row), but rarely nap leading up to my shift. I may sleep from 11p-11a prior to my shift though. Then I will work, come home, and sleep all day... and get into my nocturnal routine until it's time to switch back to life with the daywalkers. :)
