Hostile work environment

Published

So I just moved to another state and got a job in an outpatient clinical setting. My background is working in intensive care as a charge nurse for almost four years. As much as the outpatient/clinical setting was different, I have enjoyed the "normal" Monday through Friday hours.

Anyways, before I started working the experienced nurses that were going to train me quit. So I was trained by a traveler that had been there 1 month and float nurses intermittently. My manager quit only 2 months into my job. A couple more nurses were hired and we were without a manager (we did have someone who checked on us a couple times here and there) for the next four months.

I had to go out on FMLA for a short period of time because apparently I had a spinal fracture and herniated discs. When I got back to work, the environment had changed and the nurses started acting differently. When I went to my acting manager at the time He said that they were complaining that I was not doing my share of the responsibilities. I am not sure how that could be possible because I work my *#* off every day just like I did before coming to this new position. They went on to make accusations of things that I had "done wrong". The environment then escalated into full harassment and the tension could not be ignored.

In retrospect I still don't know what happened but when my acting manager did not help the situation I went to HR and HR said it was the managers problem. Meetings were held and finally things cooled down a bit. In the mean time I have been looking for other jobs in the same hospital but apparently this situation is now in my "HR file" and it has hindered my progress.

I am just afraid that these girls could potentially ruin my career with their false accusations. I want to get out of this job but finding another one has been difficult. The stress I have been experiencing has been so terrible that I feel like it is now effecting my ability to work in this environment...

What rights do I have? If I were to leave this company completely, how would I explain why I left if it takes me a while to find another job. I am thinking about trying travel nursing but really I am not sure what to do next....

I believe you have become the designated "IT." You aren't the new guy particularly, insomuch as you have been there longer, just not within their little world. This is toxic. Were I you I'd stay but then I am what some call by the B word and love a fight. That is NOT to be admired.

Look around for agencies that supply whatever degree you have. I would suspect if there are large hospitals around they would grab you up. Now keep your yukky job and do this on weekends or holidays.

Once you find a place that meets hospitality rules you approve of, then you can request to cut back on the toxic job hours. It they OK it fine, if not, then I say get outta Dodge and go towards the light and away from Tox City. Life is too short to be labeled IT.

You did not say how far you relocated but is it close enough that you can visit old friends in person? If not that by phone or text with positive reinforcement and not complaints? They know you are a fine individual. I know you are a fine individual just reading this. TOXIC is always BAD. Happy is always GOOD. GO. Get some happy in you r life and leave IT to the TOXIC.

Thank you for the encouragement! I actually moved over 20 hours away from home so I am not able to visit with the family and friends there but that's the great thing about telephones! You definitely labeled the environment correctly... TOXIC.
