Hospitals in Trouble

Nurses General Nursing

....face it! There is no way you can keep up good patient care while you are inadequately staffed! There are limits! That fact that you are asking HOW you can give good care under those circumstances is exactly what the hospital is counting on! As long as we continue to martyr ourselves, the more they'll ask us to do! I don't have any answers for you except to document, document, document your concerns about inadequate staffing, so that if someone is severely injured or dies, you are on record as stating to management/administration that you were working under unsafe conditions. What about your state regulatory board for healthcare insitutions? Do they have standards? What about letting the media know? Your Congressmen? Postings like yours are becoming more frequent unfortunately, and there is some point at which we all need to put our foot down, and that time is rapidly approaching, if not already here in some parts of the country.......Good luck!

Barton, Saw your message. I emailed a message to Sen. Dick Durbin (IL) on Feb 17 and am waiting for a reply. If there is no response I will email him again. I directed him to wwnurse. com webboards. I will email the ANA. The other day at work I mentioned to management that what we are doing is patient endangerment and I'm sure I've probably put my job at risk--which is very scary. Does any one know what my legal rights are? The hospital is non-union (not because I haven't tried!!). We are run by policy, not contract. Management has the right to change the policy whenever it is in THEIR best interest. I am a charge nurse and was informed in a meeting that charge nurses are an extension of management and we were to back them. I asked who is supposed to speak for the nurses---I received no reply--the subject was changed. I'll probably be removed from this position! We have been averaging 10-15 hours of overtime per nurse per week. Yesterday, our census was down so instead of giving those nurses time off we had to FLOAT!! Is this fair? I plead to all nurses---write ANA, your legislature, and anyone else necessary. Save your patients and yourselves.

barton,

We can also write legislators via email. TO find the addresses quickly, here's a few spots to go. All you have to do is type in your zip and the addresses will pop up!

For Representatives:

www.house.gov/writerep/

For congress:

legislators.com/a2s2/elecmail.html

I've written my Reps and Congressman here in MI and I'm awaiting a reply smile.gif Have also encouraged friends and family members to write also.

Joellen,

First, let me thank you for responding and for your e-mails to government officials. BRAVO!!!! That's Sophie, you and I on this forum so far, and I have great confidence that many others will join in.

It broke my heart to read about the response you were given at work.

I don't know what your legal rights are, but I would strongly suggest that you DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT. While it is fresh in your mind, document, in great detail, every conversation and comment that is relevant, and keep this as your diary of events re: understaffing, any practices that you deem to be unfair or dangerous and the responses you received from superiors.

Please let us know how you are doing. I wish you the best of luck and peace of mind.

THANKS AGAIN.

Hi All!!!

I owe you an explanation:

I'd like each of you to know that I typed a long post today thanking iamme8557, jmccrn, BethanyJ, Sophie, and Joellen for their efforts in writing/e-mailing legislators and the ANA, for giving us the e-mail address to find our legislators' e-mail addresses, and for mentioning the AARP and the media as additional resources to notify.

I also urged you to continue your efforts and to see other posts under "General Discussion--Topic: Reply to barton".

THEN...........I PROMPTLY LOST MY POST!!

I don't know what I did wrong but I'm almost certain I messed it up SOMEHOW!!!

Ah, well....Maybe it will show up somewhere.

In any event, A BIG THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!!

LET'S KEEP UP THE E-MAIL TO THE ANA AND OUR LEGISLATORS! I FEEL A GREAT DEAL OF MOMENTUM HERE AND ON THE FORUM I LISTED ABOVE (APPARENTLY IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO REACH THE AMERICAN NURSES ASSOCIATION FOR AT LEAST AN HOUR RECENTLY----SOUNDS GOOD, HUH???!!!)

THANK YOU ALL FOR RESPONDING AND FOR YOUR CONTINUED EFFORTS!! WE CAN DO THIS!!!

I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH FROM ALL OF YOU!

Please keep posting ideas and information.

And.....if you receive any replies from ANA, etc., PLEASE post them!

Thanks!!

Welp... my part in this is to fight it on many fronts.. cuz this is a battle.. mmmm i'm thinking of Mel Gibson's war cry in Braveheart... gut wrenching.. torn from my throat.. AAAAAHhhhhhh

first.. i've contacted my state ANA and am in contact with our "workplace advocacy" chairperson...

secondly, i've called my representative to the House and asked for an appointment to speak with him in person...

thirdly, i am writing an editorial for my cities paper to make them aware of the situation.. i'm not much of a writer.. but SOMETHING has got to be done!! i'm using the analogy of the childcare laws currently in effect to describe our situation.. "would you consider leaving your baby in a situation where there is only one adult to 8 babies? never! yet adults who are sick and to an extent helpless either by their illnesses or medications are left with that type of care every day"... the point being we should be just as concerned with nurse/patient ratios as we are with childcare worker/child ratios because both populations are VULNERABLE!

lastly, i haven't yet.. but i will write a letter to the ANA...

THE TIME HAS COME FOR US TO TAKE RISKS AND GET OFF OUR COLLECTIVE BOHUNKASSES our administrators are more worried about keeping their jobs than DOING their jobs.. and until we speak up and MAKE people listen.. it will continue..

SISS BOOM BAH.. mmmm just felt like we needed a cheer.. fight on my people.. fight on!!!

LRichardson,

Way to go. That is an excellent analogy!! Do you mind if I use it in my next submission to my legislators? Also, thank you for the encouraging cheer! Here's another one for the team:

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Nurses!!!!!!!!

LRichardson,

THANK YOU FOR JOINING IN OUR MISSION TO DO SOMETHING POSITIVE RATHER THAN JUST CONTINUE TO COMPLAIN!!!!

I agree with BethanyJ--love your analogy, comparing the helplessness of infants to that of our patients of all ages! I ask also if I may use it in further correspondence.

And haven't we all made that gut-wrenching cry emotionally at work and verbally as we enter our homes at the end of another shift?

The most exciting thing I've heard is that you are writing an editorial. PLEASE post a copy of it and replies to it on this Forum for all of us to see!! I think it will do our hearts good to see it and hopefully prompt others to join us!!

I have e-mailed the ANA 3 times with no response as yet, but I will not give up. I have e-mailed the Florida Nurses Association as well and written to Rep. C. W. Young (FL). Please see all posts under "Management Wake Up, Hospitals in Trouble, and Reply to barton" under "General Discussion" on this site. Also, as one of our members suggested, I did refer Rep. Young to this site.

BethanyJ,

I ECHO YOUR LAST STATEMENT HERE!!

BethanyJ is one of our regular supporters and has great ideas and suggestions.

MOST importantly, she and others have taken ACTION!!!

A MESSAGE TO ALL:

Thanks for your continued posts and actions taken.

I BEG all of you to continue your efforts and I especially Beg others who have not written to the ANA, AARP, state nursing associations, newspapers and legislators to please do so ASAP. If you can think of any other avenues for us, please post.

The e-mail addresses and the sites to obtain addresses of legislators are posted all over the place under the topics listed above and you don't have to be concerned with how to address senators and representatives because the only thing you have to type is the body of the letter and name the person to whom you want it sent. The date, title and address of person, greeting, closing and signature ARE ALL DONE FOR YOU!!

Just READ the topics I've mentioned. Many of the people here have posted e-mail addy's, ways to reach legislators and other invaluable ideas.

AGAIN, THANK YOU ALL!!! AND PLEASE CONTINUE TO POST WHAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN AND TO WHOM, AND ANY RESPONSES YOU RECEIVE. PLEASE NAME THE STATE YOUR FROM (IF YOU DON'T MIND) AND WE CAN GET A BETTER IDEA OF WHAT STATES ARE REPRESENTED HERE!!

THANKS,

barton

A message from the other side of the pond. Nurses in the UK always thought you had it so good in the States but it appears we're suffering similar problems. Nationwide we are suffering a shortage of nurses so we're not in danger of being laid off but our management loves to save money too. As a result wards are dangerously understaffed and unqualified or newly qualified i.e. inexperienced nurses are used to fill the gaps because they are the cheapest. We too have to battle with our legislators for the safety and well being of our patients. Perhaps it should be a case of International Nurses uniting to promote nurse to patient ratios. Good luck to you all in the fight.
