I'll be graduating in May and was really hoping to work in icu. It seems most of the hospitals in south florida do not hire new grads into icu. I've called broward general and was told only peds icu accepts new grads. After searching on hospital websites(memorial, holy cross, etc) it seems most hospitals require at least 1 yr critical care experience before hiring into icu. The only hospital I know for ceratin hires new grads is Jackson, but that's a bit far. Can anyone recommend hospitals in the broward area that hires new grads into icu or know of any recent grads that were accepted into icu.
Also, would I need to take a critical care course before even applying for icu positions or should i do that after securing a position?
Thanks

Hi Deztiny,
I'm a recent grad and just got hired into ICU. I have no experience, but I was fortunate enough to get in! I know that most of these hospitals discourage hiring new nurses into specialty units, but if you have the will you can get it.
I waited til I passed my boards before looking (but I really didn't want to work while studying, it is up to you). What I would suggest you do is get these recruiters on the phone and let them know your interests.
I have found that most Broward hospitals have internship programs for specialty units but your timing must be right! Their web sites will have those positions posted when they are open. With May right around the corner, you have some competition with students who have to be placed b/c they have scholarships... so act fast! and don't take anything LESS THAN YES!
GOOD LUCK!
