Hospital hoarders and pack rats

I work in a hospital and we will get patients who like to hoard things. They get upset if thou dare remove their property (usually hospital stuff).

So how do you deal with them and get them agree to clutter a bit.

Finally, what was the worst patient pack rat seen?

It's one thing for you staff in the hospital setting. But by LTC regulations, that half room is considered their HOME. We have to proceed cautiously. Hoarding is possible in a LTC semi-pvt room.

Homelike setting doesn't trump infection control.

Both my facilities have a policy, signed upon admission, that unopened non-perishable food can be stored, but that perishable food will be removed by staff after a certain period of time (hours, not days).

For that matter, homelike setting is a guideline, not hard and fast rules. Med carts, centralized nurse's stations, and matching bedspreads are all things that many facilities have that CMS states are undesirable.
