hospice volunteers

Published

Our volunteer situation is just about dead...poor choice of words, but we have only about 3 active one's and they are only available in the evenings...we serve approx 20 pts, and the majority of the families do not want a volunteer...we need to begin a new training session, but do you have any ideas to pass along? Thanks a zillion!

ARe you looking for recruitment ideas? renerian

It would be helpful to get ideas for recruiting, but I am wondering what you do as far as on going things...ie do you meet with them frequently, do they come to IDT mtgs, etc Thanks!

I do not go into the IDT meetings as I work full time but a few do. Mostly retired people who have time. It is not required that they do. Hubby is an ED for a hospice and they have qtrly training, in the evening and meet twice a year. Are you have a hard time getting the ones you have to come in? Where are you getting them from? Do you run ads for volunteers?

We have a wonderful volunteer staff. We're a small hospice (ave. 35-40pts) but we have at least that many volunteers. We have 1 staff member that is in charge of it and has recruited from churches, past patient's families, women's groups, etc. She has a very in-depth training program that includes input and training from the cna's, nurses, social workers, berievement counselor and chaplans. Volunteers are included as part of the team and can be as involved as they want, including going to IDT's and we (the nurses) welcome their input.

Yes volunteers are very welcome at IDT but at the ones I volunteer with not many attend due to work committments.

They run ads in small papers, not big ones looking for volunteers. They also send out a monthly newsletter, put together by volunteers and that is sent to previous client families,, businesses and such. They do all types of community events.
