Home Care

Published

I am a new grad RN and I recently took a job up with a home care facility. I'm just wondering if home care counts as experience. If I do this for one year, would I be a more competitive candidate for hospital jobs, or is home care not considered as enough experience? I'd appreciate everyone's input!

Home health is a bona fide nursing specialty. Experience is experience, but that does not mean that the hospital won't consider someone else more qualified than you in the hiring process. All employers can set their own hiring standards. I don't think about that because I am happy to have a job. Not all of us have the luxury of picking and choosing our employers from among many job offers, and thus tailoring our experience to fit another employer's standards. Most take the job and the experience they can get.

thanks caliotter3!! It's definitely tough out here in Hawaii as a new grad and I took whatever came my way first.

You were very lucky to get a job from what I read about the job market in Hawaii. Where I am there used to be plenty of work in home health, now there is almost nothing. Good luck with the new job. Hope you like it.
