Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD

My only real experience at Holy Cross is as a patient. The have a Peds ER, with it's own triage nurse--which is pretty cool. It's also a really popular place for childbirth--their postpartum unit is cushy :). They are doing a lot of renovating and the nurses I chatted up all seemed to be very happy with HC. The pay is competitive, not the most in the area, but pretty good, about $28/hr--so I've heard. The surrounding area is a nice residential neighborhood; not super expensive, avg. prices are around $325,000. It's right off the beltway and commuting can be horrific--depending upon the shift you'll be working. It's a Catholic Hospital and there are nuns, monks and priests about.

They are building a new ICU tower there that will open in 2015. The units look outdated and they dont even have a pyxis system for materials. My friend likes the Peds ER there but any critical care peds are taken to Childrens National. They have a decent NICU and they have the highest amount of childbirths in Maryland but if you know the demographics it makes sense. Some Catholic hospitals don't endorse birth control (and dont offer it as a benefit for its employees) so heads up on prescriptions there. If you want peds specialty go to Childrens or Hopkins.

Yeah unless you are looking for NICU HCH does not have a large peds population. I would look at Children's, Shady Grove (has inpt peds and PEDs ER), Georgetown, Fairfax, and then University of Maryland and Hopkins if you are willing to go up to Baltimore

This is really late but speaking from the pediatric ER the ratios are horrible. Talking to the floor nurses their director is a total micro-manager and I was told not to think about it by a colleague who is looking to leave.The hospital in general has focused on building a new hospital and ICU tower and has cut employee benefits, suspended raises, and over time so when you a short several nurses it is sink or swim. The pay is great if you work PRN otherwise it is not worth your time or the stress. Surrounding area is average. Hopefully you bypassed the opportunity otherwise you already are experiencing what I am talking about.
