Hi everyone,
I am writing this today b/c I am a somewhat new LVN grad (2011) which I am now enrolled in the LVN-ADN RN upgrade (graduating May 2015). I recently found a per diem job at an urgent care facility and so far the people I have met are very nice. However, I cannot seem to understand the per diem situation with them. Will I be expected to be on call and have to come in whenever they call me or am I going to at some point give them my availability days and that's when they call? Also, is it normal to start training before the 3 day orientation process? I am starting the third semester ADN program in fall of 2015 and want to know if Per Diem is possible as a student? they told me I am required to do minimum 2 shifts a month and they schedule 6 weeks in advance. i am afraid to keep asking too many questions b/c it seems there getting annoyed with me asking.
Thanks for everyone's input

Hi! I am an RN that also graduated in 2011. I have learned over the past couple years that per diem/contingent is most definitely the best way to make money and have flexibility. I currently have two contingents jobs and I pick up days when and where I want, as well as shifts I want. I am not required to do anything on call, but I also work for hospitals so I'm not sure how urgent care works. I will never go full time again as an RN! Pay is way better contingent (time and a half of what our full time/part time pay is at my facilities). Plus I am starting the DNP program in the fall so it's comforting to know I'll still be able to keep both jobs while I'm in a strenuous program.
they said my training will be with a trainer that will release me when he sees im ready. but am i required to work the same shifts as a regular job while training?
Depends on the facility but I know a lot of places will require full time hours while training
the problem is this trainer only works 3 days a week, 11 hour shifts which fall on the days I have my other job, so i had to rearrange my hours in my other job to make it work so I can train at least 8 hours during those 3 days instead of the 11. hopefully i wont be asked to leave because of the schedule thing lol
It should be ok, I have found most employers to be pretty flexible.
