Hi everyone,

I am very happy to find this site, it's very educational.

I would like to try agency or traveling. Is there a difference between a travel assignment and contract? It sounds the same to me, but I've been told (by local agency) that to be considered a traveler your permanent address needs to be 50-100 miles away from assignment, and being a contracter you don't. Is this true?

Then another agency told me it is not so. So I'm a little confused.

Has anyone worked with National Healthcare Agency? Thank you.

Actually it's National Healthcare Staffing Agency I would like to know more about. How can I found out more info about an agency?

Specializes in ICU's,TELE,MED- SURG.

I have been working both local agency and also do travel nursng. They're so different. First off, travel is something you may or may not like. The salaries are coming down. It's fun to go to new places but also, it's fun to be home and work local agency with a contract. More money and I mean a lot more money doing local agency. The good part is flexibility. Do both and you'll make out fine. The best situation is without a contract if the hospital can keep you busy but in some places it can be a challenge.

Belka,

What the agency told you about being at least 50 to 100 miles away from your permanent tax home is true about travel nursing. This is based on rules established by the IRS. If you are close enough to home that you can commute back and forth to work they do not consider it 'travel'. What the other agency told you is also true in a way because there is such a thing as local travel. In this case you would be ineligible for certain tax-free benefits that travelers get because, as far as the IRS is concerned, you are living and working in your tax home.

I agree that the salaries are coming down for 'distance' traveling. The rates I'm being quoted now are lower than what I was seeing last year. Low enough to not make it worthwhile for me. I'm making more money now doing local agency work. I'll look into hitting the highways again in the summer when the local work dries up.
