Just wondering...
Does anyone use gel-pillows/pads under patients on HFOV??
Has anyone heard that it is contraindicated??
Our policy is to use a gel pillow for just the head when on HFOV. I have heard from a snarky nurse that I gave report to that gel pillows should be avoided all together because it impedes the action of the HFOV. I always figured if you see good wiggle/jiggle in the chest area why would the gel pillow be impeding anything? I also couldn't see any sound research one way or another.

If we think they are going to be on HFOV for a long period we use zflow IF they tolerate it being moved for xray. If they are very unstable and do not tolerate the movement or we think HFOV will be short term then we just use blanket rolls for boundaries. It really varies from patient to patient. We have never been told by our RT's that it is contraindicated. It's just nursing preference and baby tolerance.
