HESI Critical thinking

Published

OK, someone please help! I take the HESI on Friday, and have prepared as much as I can for everything except Critical thinking. I'm really worried because it's not necessarily something you can "study" for, but the practice questions I've seen look very tricky. I'm obviously taking the HESI to get into nursing school, so I'm not very knowledgeable regarding patients and their different diseases, who should be cared for first, etc. Are the questions somewhat "common sense" and "what I would do if it were me" or is it more in depth, where you need to know what condition is top priority, symptoms regarding different diseases etc? If someone can just give me a brief idea on how "complex" this section is, I'd be grateful!

Hi. I took HESI not so long ago and I can say, CT was not that bad. Yes, most of it is common sense, but this is where the tricky part is. You may select the option that is common sense, but in fact, is wrong. To correct, all questions are correct. You have to select the best one possible. There will be questions on prioritization of care, professionalism, and such. All I can say is, read each question a couple times. Try to understand what the question is asking. Then read possible choices. Start by eliminating the ones that do not make sense at all. Then narrow down to two, that might be the most important. You will never be 100% sure. However, some questions may be a bit easy and you can answer then right away. Remember, ABC rule, it will really help you!

For example, you may see question like this:

"You are an ED nurse and these are your patients:

Patient A: delivered from the car crush scene with a gash wound in his head;

Patient B: A 7-year old who is vomiting;

Patient C: An 85-year old male diagnosed with the prostate cancer who is crying because of the news;

Patient D: A 60-year old female that complains of chest pain and feeling dizzy.

Question: who do you see first?"

Of course, the above question I completely made up, but it gives an example of the type of questions you may see on HESI.

Good luck!

Thank you so much! This reaaaalllly helps :)
