Help UK-mass NP

World Registration

Published

Hi all. This is my first post with the forum but I have been reading for a few years now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am from London and I married an American 5 years ago now. We are wanting to move to the states but as a nurse I wanted to check the requirements to get my licence. I went to a 3 year intensive course for adult nursing as an undergraduate course. I am licensed as an adult RN. I have worked in the ER and other such surgical wards since my registration. Last year I took part in a nurse practitioner advanced trainin programme through the NHS. I am now a practicing surgical nurse practitioner with 1.5 years experience.

Looking at at the requirements to move to mass just as an RN I would need to have credentials approved cgfns exam as well as the nclex. Is this right?

does anyone know if an international nurse practitioner can transfer to the usa and if so what are the steps for that? Maybe one state is easier than another so we are also open to an easier route to get started.

Thanks so much!

Si

one must have a master's degree in nursing to become a NP as well as pass another national exam. you also need Ob and pediatric experience to become a RN. All these states have pretty much the same requirement and best to apply in the state you plan to live.

Specializes in NICU.

Ginger's mom is right, if you've only trained with adults, your education won't be sufficient because you can't get a NP license without a RN license. Do a search on the forum; it's been brought up a few times. You might be able to call local US nursing schools and ask them if they'll take you for the clinicals you need, but there hasn't been a lot of reported success. If you can get the hours you need in England, that might be easier if they would let you do that.

Some states don't require a master's degree, but they do require a certificate (this is pretty rare though and I think most certificate NPs are grandfathered in). You are probably looking at completing a formal master's program in the US, unless you can get your masters in the UK.

Just curious, there is no licensure exam or separate license to be a NP in the UK, right? I have a UK nursing license (American trained) and am in NP school right now. My DH and I might move to the UK in the future (he is English and has family there).
