Help! transfering to New York state license

Published

New grad NP here. I've been working as an RN in Illinois for 5 years, just finished NP school, passed my AANP certification exam and received my Illinois state license. I've been offered a job in New York and I am so overwhelmed by the state licensing process. Has anyone had experience with this before? There are about 10 different forms on the state website. Any input is greatly appreciated! :)

It looks a lot worse than it actually is. Its one of those things where you send in the forms and wait. You are not transferring, you are applying. Applying for an NP license there is not like applying for reciprocity for an RN license. You have to do their whole thing. If you never had a New York RN license then you need to do that as a first step. They also require written certification from your NP school about the classes that you took, with special focus on pharmacology---which they insist must come directly from the school. This is one of the forms in the package. They also include a form to be filled out by your examining board. I did the ANCC exam, and ANCC sends their own letter to them (which they will accept instead of the form).

They are bureaucrats but my experience with them is that if you don't leave any unanswered questions on the form, and if they get all your paperwork from the school and from the AANP/ANCC they will process it in less than the time they tell you it will take. Its not going to be quick though, so unless you definitely plan to move to New York anyway you should find out from the employer if they are prepared to wait.
