Help

Ive been an RN for almost 2 years and for majority of that (with the exception of 3 months) I have been an ED nurse. Ive worked in two different states during this time and needless to say I am stressed out. Quite frankly, the attitudes and commentary, as well as lack of help from other nurses is quite discouraging. The racism within the department is very obvious and comments from other nurses with racial connotation is becoming a nuisance. Trying to stay professional is becoming quite difficult and bringing it to management is pointless. They do nothing about it and proceed to brush it off. I am unsure if I need to change careers completely or what. Advice would be great.

Great news! You've had two years of experience in a fast-paced acute care environment! You can go almost anywhere and the world is your oyster. You are not frozen to this situation which you don't prefer. What else do you want to do? Not all of nursing is like what you describe. Don't change careers just yet. Change where you're working first. Best of luck to you.

I'll be the bad cop: Just quit nursing then. Walk away. That's what they want. Let the jerks win. Let them get the better of you.

Whew, now that's out of the way, do something about your stress, then find a job where you coworkers arn't a huge hot slice of crap pie.

There are different kinds of political issues everywhere. It doesn't matter what facility you work at or where you go you will run into different problems. I've had the racial issues at many facilities here in Georgia, but I've finally found one where that's not the case but then there are new issues that are just as difficult. I have a wonderful team environment now but there's still those few people that make work hell, doesn't matter where you go. There is usually a different culture on every unit so I would just keep transferring around until you find one you can tolerate. That's what I've done.
