Hey ya'll, I'm new to the NI board and to NI. I've been a superuser in the past but just started 1. a heck of an NI job and 2. my MSN in NI. Anyways since I'm new to everything I'm in a quandary. For one thing I need to interview an NI nurse who has her master's in NI. Any takers? Everyone I know only has their undergrad. 2. I have to write an ethics paper on NI, ethical issues NI nurses face. All the lit I have found is about general informatics ethics, not specific to the ethical issues NI nurses might face. I thought about writing a paper on the ethics behind determining levels of access to the EHR/ EMR but not sure how to word it and get anything back on the lit search.
Any help at all is greatly appreciated, I'm ready to go nuts!
Thanks again
Jen

Welcome JenKatt!
Congrats on your new job and starting grad school.
Related to inteviewing an NI with an MSN degree, posting here is one option.........I'm assuming your school does not have an NI PhD program?.........other options would be to post to Nursing L and or CARING's listserve........or e-mail be your contact info (DO NOT POST TO THE FORUM) and I can pass it on to one of my colleagues who holds an MSN in NI. Would one who holds a Phd be okay too? Let me know.
Now as far as the class assignment........... Check with your instructor but I would think that all Informaticists, no matter their specialty (Medical, Nursing, Pharmacy, Healthcare, etc) face similiar ethhical delimas.
I see what you mean related to wording...........My first questions would be:
Are there any ethical specific issues related to determining levels of access to the EMR?
What about: " examples of computer use that are questionable from an ethical viewpoint. For example:"
-"Many people copy, use, and distribute software to which they have no rights.
-Organizations collect, buy, and use information on citizens without conscientiously checking the validity or accuracy of that information,
-People create and spread viruses that cause considerable trouble for those using and maintaining IT systems, including sensitive medical information systems.
-Information system developers put systems on the market before they're completely tested. In the case of medical information systems, this can endanger people's lives.
-People deliberately break into computer systems and steal passwords, personal information, and proprietary business information.
-Many employers monitor employee's e-mail and other personal documents they may have stored on their company desktop or laptop systems."
Good Luck with your assignment!

Thanks for the reply! I actually reworded the search last night and came upon some info on security and access given to users by an NI nurse.
Yes my school does have a Phd program (I'm at Maryland). Here's the problem. I'm in Florida. I don't know anyone up in Maryland ( there's no degrees in NI being offered anywhere in Florida). So I could email my advisor or what not but didn't want to have to do that since she's crazy busy and I don't know her well. I'll forward my info along to you as the assignment was any APN in Informatics, which covers PhD'ers to.
