Hello all I'm in 3rd semester which is peds and Ob........For my exam I need to know how to convent a babies wt so I know what the normal wt lost is for the newborn at birth..............My instructor told us that a baby can lose 10 to 15%..after birth..........So can someone tell me if I am doing this correctly.

If the baby wt is 7lbs 4oz I would take the

7lbs x 454= 3178

4oz x 28= 112

Than take 3178 + 112= 3290

3290 x .10%= 329.0

this is where i don't understand what to do next

What i did was converted the 7lbs 4oz to grams first....but i still dont know what amount of wt the baby can lose.........Or does anyone know a easier way...........Thanks:rolleyes:

It might be easier to convert to grams then multiply by 0.1 for the 10 % number, and by 0.15 for the 15 % number.

7 lbs X 454 grams = 3178 grams

3178 X 0.1 = 317.8 grams (/ 454 = 11.2 oz)

3178 X 0.15 = 476.7 grams (/ 454 = 16.8 oz)

What about The other 4oz did you just add it to the oz?.............Because the baby wt was 7lbs 4oz

Well, your math example used only 7 pounds...

Each ounce is 28.4 grams. So 4 ounces would be 115.2 grams (doing this in my head, so verify it with a calulator please!) 3178 + 115 = 3293. 3293 x 0.1 = 329.3 GRAMS, AND 3293 x 0.15 = ~444 grams.
