HELP! New grad residency options

Nurses Career Support

Hi, I just graduated last May. I need honest insights and opinions, please!

HOSPITAL A

30 mins away

Offer:

  • Base pay + $1 for BSN
  • Full-time MedSurg position
  • DAY SHIFT
  • works 2 weekends in a month
  • LARGER hospital (if I want growth, I would stay in this hospital IMHO)
  • level 1 trauma
  • Familiar with this hospital because I did almost all my clinical hours in this hospital
  • AND... I am already doing backgrounds with this hospital since they gave me an offer 3 weeks ago. (I don't know what to do about this in case I end up choosing Hospital B)

HOSPITAL B (my first choice BUT it took forever for them to schedule an interview and call with an offer)

15 mins away

Offer:

  • Base pay is almost $5/hr more than Hospital A
  • Weekend differential of $5/hr
  • 5k sign-on bonus, need to stay within the hospital for 3 years but can move to diff departments
  • Full-time MedSurg
  • VARIABLE SHIFT
  • Smaller hospital
  • Bad reputation around town ?
  • Their schedule is a bit different - you might be working all weekends in a month

I know Hospital B is very tempting, but I have some non- negotiables...

I only want to work DAYS (I worked nights as an LVN and I CANNOT DO IT) and I want to have weekends off as much as possible to have time with my family. And the fact that hospital B is already processing my backgrounds.

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND HELPING A BABY NURSE OUT ❤️

Hi! It sounds like you've already made the decision! If you want to work days only choose job #1. If it's a non-negotiable, then it's non-negotiable. The extra money upfront won't be worth the struggle of working nights and at a hospital with a poor reputation. You will have more opportunities for growth and educational advancement at hospital #1, plus you did clinicals there so that will help ease the transition. Good luck!
