Help! Mother/baby no experience

Hey all,

I am finishing up my clinical rotation in a mother baby unit and absolutely LOVE this specially nothing compares to it. I'm graduating with a BSN in less then a year. I have experience as a tech but in a geriatric oncology setting. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on getting hired as a new grad RN in this field with no experience?

i don't wanna settle for anything less then this field. It's life changing!

thanks all!

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

No new grad has nursing experience. Seek out nurse externships/internships during this next year then seek "nurse residencies" before you graduate

Specializes in Med-Tele; ED; ICU.

One thing I would do is get some specialty books in the field and study your heart out so that you can come off as well as possible during a potential interview.

And certainly let that passion show... "life-changing" can be an excellent selling point on "why should we hire you." Just make sure it's sincere and not trite.

Let go of the "settle for less" thing, though. That smacks a bit of judgment (I can assure you that my field is not less) and snowflakishness.

Keep in mind, though... what you ultimately need is *any* experience. If you can get hired into a large academic medical center, they're usually pretty good about letting people change specialties after a couple of years.
