HELP ME PLEASE! 2 job offers, less than 24 hours to decide

Published

Hi all, I graduate with my BSN next week!!! I can't believe I have made it this far. I interviewed for a small hospital where i had clinical on a med-surg unit and was offered the job. I also interviewed a bigger magnet status teaching hospital (Froedtert and the Medical College), on a pulmonary internal med floor. It's been two weeks and had not heard anything from the big hospital. I left a voicemail accepting the position at the smaller hospital for 8 hours PM shifts. And told the manager i was going to accept (I had my last clinical there today). THEN the bigger hospital calls offering me a position with a formal offer tomorrow, there I will start as a nurse extern right after graduation and when I pass my boards became a staff a nurse, it pays a few dollars more than the smaller hospital but I will be working 7/70, which is a little scary because I am worried about getting burnt out.

My dad is a physician and my family is strongly suggesting I go with the bigger hospital because I will have more learning opportunities, I will also see more and do more. They tell me I should strive to be the best I can be. I agree, but the bigger hospital is intimidating and because I have had clinical at the smaller hospital I feel more comfortable...however my Mom tells me a challenge is a GOOD thing. I can hardly decide what to order when I go out to eat let alone decide on a job in 24 hours. Any advice? Where did you start? What do you recommend? How do you base your decisions?

I totally messed up this post. What I meant to say is the smaller hospital offered me a job immediately after my interview. It took Froedtert 3 weeks to e-mail me that I was a "finalist" for the position I interviewed for. I literally got the e-mail the very day after I accepted the position at the smaller facility. I wanted to know what Froedtert would offer so I submitted the background check information they required in the e-mail. The next day they called me saying that had an update on the position but did not have the green light yet to extend me an offer and would do so within the next day. The next day I literally was checking my phone every 15 minutes awaiting their phone call. I never received one. I decided to call them and that it when they said they had an offer ready. I thought it was so strange I had to contact them to even get my offer. They offered me rotating days and nights which I thought would really exhaust me. When offered this position I told the HR lady I was really unsure about those hours. She said that is all she had the "green light" for offering me. Later when I called back to decline, she said she could scrap the offer and offer different hours. This seemed odd as she had told me she could only offer me the rotating hours when i was offered the position. I also explained I didn't like how the manager who wanted to hire me was only temporary. Again, HR said they would be getting a permanent manager the week I would be starting. I didn't want to accept a position when I didn't even know who my boss would be. Just a lot of red flags there.
