HELP! Losing faith!

At 15 I wanted to be a great ER nurse. I am 20 now and am preparing for my boards this summer. I have accepted my first position in a telemetry unit. The real world is wearing on me. I feel so scared, overwhelmed, and scared of whats to come. I don't know how it will ever all come together! I am losing faith and need some advice!

A nurse at 20... wow!

WOW. You are 20 and graduated! What you need to do is give yourself a HUGE pat on your back for doing something I would think a lot of 18-20 year olds would not be able to do. When I was 20, all I did was whine about not knowing what I'm doing with my life, and go to parties with my friends. The fact that you are smart, responsible, and a very young and successful RN-to-be should be exhilirating to you! The fact that you got through rough nursing school, and fulfilling your dreams like that, good for you! You graduated NS! :yeah: Don't you think they would have kept you back if the teachers didn't think you could do it out in the real world? Sure, being a new hire is scary but you can do it! You have great timing bandaid, and you should be proud of yourself. You have more time than most people to get your masters, check out other avenues in the nursing field, and etc, and have time to think about things in your personal life such as getting married, having kids, and being financially stable if you plan on doing so down the road. Boy do I wish I was in your shoes.. I just started NS, and in my late 20's! sigh. Anyway, you are just scared. Just remember that you graduated nursing school for a reason. Don't lose faith!! :nurse: When you start your new job, you'll probably have a preceptor that'll help you out and train you.

Ok, I ENVY you!

A nurse at 20! You go girl! Only I wish I could turn back the hands of time and done what I am doing now at 34 at the age of 20.

Graduating nursing school at such a young age is a great accomplishment! Pat your self on the back! I understand your feelings of being overwhelmed and scared because you are transitioning into your new role as a nurse, but I'm quite sure you will get a great orientation.

Again, you should be very proud of yourself! Most 20 year olds in this day and age have no clue what they want to do with their lives, let alone become a nurse.:yeah:

Specializes in Psych..

Wow, I am so impressed! I sure wish I had my poo together at your age to get a college degree. Congratulations!

Here's what I do when I'm feeling scared or overwhelmed. I used to have horrible problems with anxiety and a professional recommended this. Sounds simple, but it really helps. I write down what, specifically, I'm scared or worried about, and figure out if I have any control over it. Am I worried I will flub at performing skills on the floor? Well, I can work on that by reading and practicing. Am I worried the nurses won't be receptive to students? Nothing I can do about that, so I do my best to let it go.

Good luck to you!

Thanks everyone for the encouragement! :heartbeat It's much appreciated!
