Help getting accepted to GCC? Associates RN Degree?

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi :)

I'm 19, and I have decided that I want to go into nursing.

I have a couple problems though... the first is that I only have a 3.0 and everything I've read online says you can't even get accepted to a program without straight As. I had straight As in high school, but then went to college for my first major(music) which crushed me. I was miserable, homesick, and my GPA plummeted. I then changed colleges and majors(to Medical Technology). I'm not really happy as Med-Tech either... but I'm closer to home and I've managed to get my GPA back up to 3.0, but I know this probably isn't good enough.

I have about a years worth of experience as an EMT which is really what led me to the decision that nursing is the career for me. But.. how can I get accepted to a program with my mediocre grades?

My other problem is that I can only afford a program at a community college. The only two near me are Genesee Community College and Monroe Community College. I know how competitive MCC is so I don't have much hope there, but what about GCC?

I am extremely dedicated and if I get accepted, I will succeed. I just don't know what the best way to get accepted is. Are there any suggestions?

I'd contact both schools and meet with a nursing advisor before making any decisions. If you haven't taken A&P and Micro yet you might be pleasantly surprised at the weight they will have on your gpa if you get As. I loved my community college education, it was cheap and I came out with far more clinical skills than the BSN students at a well respected university in my area. Good luck.

I agree with Jules, meet with each school's nursing advisors. They should be able to answer all those questions you have. About your grades, 3.0 GPA isn't bad but you're right its not on par for nursing admission in most places. HOWEVER, it depends on how the school's admission process is. For my school, they only looked at the GPA of three classes- A&P, Chemistry, and Math. Some schools admit students based on ACT/SAT scores, etc. You just never know.

As far as I know, GCC looks only at overall GPA. The higher your GPA is, the better your chances are.
