I graduated in May of 2009 and passed the NCLEX in August, but have been unable to find a job as an RN. In fact I haven't even gotten the chance at an interview, all that I have gotten in response is that the hospital is looking for somebody with experience.
I have put in over 100 applications within and outside of Michigan, but it is seemingly hopeless and futile, as no hospitals want to invest the time and money into a new graduate. Instead it seems all these positions are being filled by retired nurses who are going back to work due to the decline of the economy.
I'm at a point where I might be forced out of nursing without ever really getting into it, as I can't not have a job that will allow me to function financially. This would mean being out of the nursing field for that much longer and therefore even less desirable as a candidate for employment.
If anyone knows of any hospital in Michigan that is hiring new graduate nurses I would very much appreciate it if you could post in this thread. This is pretty much my last ditch effort, before I have to start thinking of an alternative to better my future.

Were you able to work as a tech or in any other health care field while in school? What school did you graduate from? Have you been attending job fairs? Have you looked at long term care facilities? I graduate next week and I am trying not to worry too much about what happens after that . I know I'm going to really have to sell myself and somehow get some face time with the managers that actually do the hiring. I wouldn't give up if I were you, there must be something out there!

Our instructor told us to take a look at other areas nearby, such as Ohio, or more rural areas, where the quantity of freshly graduated nursing students isn't so high.

Hey, where in MI do you live, and where did you graduate? I'm in your shoes doll, but lady luck smiled on me, and I landed a job recently, I start Monday. Check out this website:http://www.selectmedicalcorp.com/dotnet/DisplayJobs.aspx
Also, when I was searching, there where 2 hospitals in Pontiac that clearly said in their adds this fall that they were hiring new grads! They were Doctor's Hospital of Pontiac, and Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital.
I know how you feel, I had been so depressed. My best advice is to continue classes toward your BSN, and just find a few jobs in a homecare agency doing prn work until you land a job. Some of my new grad friends started directly in homecare.
God bless you!
Oh, I didn't apply to the Pontiac hospitals due to the drive, and no $ to relocate....but maybe that won't be an issue for you!
