HELP! FailingRNschool-B/C I took care of myself

Published

Last semester (1st semester ofRNschool) I had Fundamentals&Health Assessment, Abnormal Psych, &OrganicCHM (2.95GPA). This semester I have Mental Health & Pathophysiology & History (14 credit hours). I failed my first test in each class (67%). During the past month I have been getting enough sleep at night, proper meals, &exercise. I am now paying the price for that b/c I did not pay too much attention to my reading &other school work. Last semester I was all WORK, WORK, WORK. I stayed up all night last night to do a careplan for this morning (we only have 2 days to complete it) and I only managed to get 1 EXCELLENT careplan done on 1 diagnosis and the 2 diagnosis I basically thought up of stuff so I can get done. All u RNStudents know that the work is not hard it just takes a LONG time to do - and I am slow at learning GRRR:madface:. Need your encouragement and advice. I have no kids, job, husband, car bills, etc. and still can not get a good grade on test, what's wrong with me? It has been 1 month since school started - What do I do now?

I'm sorry you are having such a tough time. I don't have much advice, though from experience and from what others tell me as well, NS is all about sacrifice, though for the short term. Sure you will not sleep enough, eat well enough, etc but I think for most of us in NS - it is a sacrifice that you will have to make to get through it. Just keep remembering "it is not forever". I'm sure there is nothing wrong with you at all! Try to put in more time to your studies, or try different study techniques. Even if it means losing sleep...I know it stinks feeling so exhausted, but at least you will feel more confident taking the test - and then when you do well on the test it'll be all worth it :)

I wish you the best of luck in your studies!

You know you need to devote more time to your schoolwork. But you really need to see an advisor at the school to find out what about the way you study can be improved. You want to be productive and effective. Get with your advisor and also your individual instructors to find out what is going on and what you need to change to turn this around. Good luck.

You need to get it together! You are going to lose a great opportunity because lack of focus. You need to make a weekly schedule with time in it to study and read EVERYDAY. You need to make an appointment with your individual instructors when you fail an exam to find out why. Did you not prepare for the test or did you not understand how to answer critical thinking questions? You need to find out where the problem is so you can correct it.

You have time to eat well, sleep and exercise after you graduate and get a job. With grades that poor you are really going to have to study and perform well to get through this semester. You need to really think about your time and focus- otherwise you are wasting a great opportunity, time and lots of money.

Thanks for your support. Any other comments are appreciated positive/negative. I have gone to my teachers &1 of my teachers (in mental health class) is a freshman seminar teacher too & I explained to her how I study. She said that I need to concentrate on the specifics first then look at the broad picture, so I now read my outlines/notes learn vocab words & make sure I know the material front to back, back to front - then read the chapters. I think this has worked thusfar b/c during patho class on wednesday my teacher asked us,"what color CSF is normally, what color would it be for RNs to know that something is wrong, and what should we be worried about if it is not the correct color" nobody answered the room was silent for awhile after she asked each question, unitil I answered them all....correctly:yeah:& that must have happened b/c I concentrated on the notes for studying-so I hope that means I am on the right path! I have since applied this studying technique w/ the new class material for both classes. Yesterday, I worked on patho's notes for like 5 hours - & made a quiz of 3 pages w/ material that is NEW to me from the notes. Even though I am upset it took me that long to learn the material - I know the material - so that makes up for it.

I am glad you are being proactive...hopefully you have enough time to turn this semester around. Good Luck.
