welcome to nursing man. youre definitely on a right track. volunteering is not required, but its always good to have it. i did peer educator, volunteer at nyu orthopedic floor, and did mentorship at my school. keep it up and make sure you have fun now 'cuz when u start the program, its going to be very hectic.
if you are making A's inpre-req you will be fine. don't overload yourself. Nursing is logical thinking and patience. think before you act. think before you open your mouth. think before you treat a patient. think about the reaction from your action before acting. from talking about another nurse to caring for another person, because the nurse you just dogged may be your next patient.
I agree soundly with Drey. Don't even worry about volunteering--get a job as a LNA/CNA. It will be amazingly helpful when you start doing clinicals. Routine stuff like bed-baths and patient ambulation will become--well, routine. So...in clinical you won't be struggling with the mundane stuff--and can focus on the nursing stuff. I tried to get a CNA job before my ADN and oddly nobody would hire me--"you won't be happy here....become an RN," over and over. Well, in retrospect--being a CNA/LNA for six months would have been amazingly invaluable. Another thing--do you know where you want to go? If so, go and try to talk with the person who makes decisions--ask advice, get known, though this may be hard at a large university. Develop really good reference letter writers--very important. Not all professors can write a good letter in the first place. Good luck.

Hello all,
Currently, I am pre-nursing and am working very hard at getting into my university's college of nursing. I have A's so far in the prerequisites, but I still have another year of classes to finish before I apply. Also, I am seeking more volunteer experience as I have worked as a Pharmacy Technician, participated in the American Cancer Association's "Relay for Life," and have done volunteer work in Mexico with my Univeristy. My questions are:
1. Should I be fine with solid A's and B's when I apply to the College of Nursing?
2. What healthcare work or volunteer work should I be doing right now (keeping in mind that I am taking a full load of classes every semester)?
I am a bit worried as I am sure some of you guys can relate to where I am at right now. I would greatly appreciate any helpful friendly advice that you all can provide me. I am going for this 100%, and I can't thank you enough for your help.
