Health Coaching/Wellness Consulting

Nurses Entrepreneurs

Published

Hi all,

I currently work in a wellness role at a facility and am interested in the possibility of starting an independent coaching/consulting business. This is an area of nursing that I have come to love and have a deep passion for. There seems to be quite a few places to get certified and I am looking at contacting any local associations that provide assistance with starting a small business.

For now, I was wondering if there are currently any nurses with experience in this area of nursing? Are there any experiences/advice/warnings you would like to share? I am also wondering, if there are nurses in this industry, do you continue to work FT/PT/flex at an employer and moonlight as a consultant, or have you been successful at branching off and going 100% indy (this is my eventual goal).

TIA for any advice/thoughts/constructive criticism!

Hey RedRebelRN,

I attended the Institute for Integrative Nutrition for certification as a Health Coach. I really enjoyed their format and program.

And I dropped down to Per Diem while building my coaching business, until I was able to transition to running my coaching business full-time. It allowed me to work as much or little as I needed to, depending upon my client load that week.

Hope this info helps!

Best of luck,

Anna Morrison

Thanks to both for your posts on coaching & certifications. I'm currently shoping for a Health cert. program and alot of CE's for ANCC renewal. Is there anything you didn't like about Institute of Integrative Nutrition? Would it prepare you to work in a conservative setting? Is it mainly about nutrition or is it a general program? I'm currently considering NIWH and The Wellness Inventory but cost is a big challenge. Karen Wheeler RN-BC, MGCP

Interesting... I'm in private practice & want to work in a college setting. What kind of experience did you have to get job in a wellness role? I love what I do but good private health care has almost doubled in past 5 years. And to really expand I think a strong presence in the social media is very valuable. Took a course & found out that takes alot of time spent on computer & alot of work that right now doesn't atract me. I also miss being part of a team even though I realize that has its own challenges. Karen Wheeler RN-BC,Mental Game Coaching Professional,Kripalu Yoga, Breathwalk

hello bewellplaywell, I just happened to note you are studying for the ANCC. I just sat for the boards and passed! I used a great site with review questions and rationals. Let me know if you would like more information. I was very happy with the product and glad I used it. which exam are you sitting for?
