Health Assessment without Clinicals

Hello,

I am considering a P/T RN program this fall. First semester would be Pharmacology (math included) with Health Assessment. The following semester (spring) would be Nursing Fundementals only (with clinicals.) If I'm admitted into the program Spring 2010 (assessment and pharmacology) I wouldn't be able to take the Fundementals until Fall 2010 (skipping summer totally)

Question: How important is Assessment along with Fundementals? Is it mandantory to have the assessment education the same time as clinicals?

They removed the separate health assessment course from my program, so that shows you how important some think it is. Programs that don't have separate courses for subjects like assessment and pharmacology say the material is "integrated" into other classes during the program. How well this material is covered can range from good to almost nonexistent.

So you don't think taking Fundamentals 1-2 semesters later (after a health assessment class) would be a problem?

No, not really. If you take it later, you will have some background with the assessment course under your belt, or vice versa, for that matter. Everything builds on everything else in nursing.

This is the first year my school has had assessment not running concurrent with med/surg 1. I would have liked the clinical time to practice the skills, but we did okay without it. We just practiced on each other.
