Hawaii RN jobs? Anyone from Hawaii?

Hey all, I graduated from nursing school in California in late 2009. Moved to Oahu in 2010 after i got my license. Having a hard time finding RN jobs especially ones at the hospital. Seems like there are very few new graduate programs and all other places require 1 yr + of experience. This is very frustrating. Have tried many places and nada, anyone from Hawaii have any tips???

same situation here I've applied pretty much everywhere but no offers. Its really frustrating. Good luck to us.

A question to the OP -- how do you guys apply? Do you e-mail your resume? Do you walk in? The problem might be in the way you apply...

Man, oh man! My husband was actually gonna get stationed in HI, but after we found out how hard it was for a new grad like me to get a job, we are now trying to get reassigned...

I applied EVERYWHERE on Oahu... Queens, Kapiolani, Tripler, and nothing... they all said that they need at least 1yr experience....On top of that a lady from HR at Queens told me that they have University of HI graduates there currently working as CNAs just to get their foot in the door...

She said that they "promise" those new grads position after they get a year of experience there, and I asked her if that was guaranteed, and she said that they still have new grads that have worked for over a year with no RN job placement on any unit in the hospital. So, they are pretty much doing CNA work with an RN license...

I also spoke with someone at Tripler, and tried to get in under military spouse preference... She still informed me that they like to have at least 1 yr experience, and that HI is extremely tough for new grads... so tough, that new grads from UofHI are actually coming to the mainland to find jobs...

I didn't walk in, but I did call, email, and applied online to over 30 positions... Rejected for all of them just because of my lack of experience. (But then again, I hadn't taken my boards at the time).

Its really really hard in Hawaii to get a job as a new grad. Its become a basically who do you know game. I suggest getting a home health RN job. I know Wilson Home Health is good for new grads. Then keep applying for jobs, RN and otherwise (CNA, patient care coordinators, etc) at your top choice hospitals and see if you can get your foot in the door. I know some people who got jobs at Kap and Kaiser after working for 6-9 months as as CNA. I worked at Queens for a year as a CNA and had friends on the floor who has worked for a year as a CNA with their RN license and still didn't have a job as an RN on the horizon so I think Queen's is pretty near impossible. I know one new grad that got a job at Tripler after volunteering on a peds floor.

Also volunteer at some of the medical non-profits in town. I made some great connections doing so. I opted to move to the mainland for my first acute care job but if that's not an option hopefully the above suggestions might help. Good luck!
