Has anyone heard of getting fired in LTC because of overtime?

Published

I just started a new job in LTC and was told that management gets very upset when nurses have to do overtime in order to complete their assignment. However, they do write up nurses who don't complete their assignments. I was just curious if anyone has ever heard of an LTC nurse getting fired because of too much overtime? I saw one of the nurses clocking out and then returning back to her work station to complete her work.

It depends on the management, but if you work in a facility that is so strict about overtime, then they may not give anyone a break. I have certainly seen this. I would talk to my manager, DON, whoever is the next one up in your chain of command. I have always explained to them that because I am new it takes me longer to complete some of the documentation, but that I expect that to resolve itself within a couple of weeks. The reality of it is though, that there are always falls, families or physicians to notify about one thing or another, etc. that keep us late. I would never work off the clock, I don't donate time to someone that does not want to pay me for documentation that they need done to be in compliance with the regulations.
