Has anybody had an emotional meltdown while providing patient care?

I am doing my preceptor shifts now and my own mother is in the hospital not doing well. The other day I started crying while I was pushing an IV medication. Thank goodness she was unconscious. Any ideas on how I can suck it up and get through these shifts?

One time in clinicals during my OB rotation my CI embarrassed the heck out of me in front of a pt. what she said hurt me so bad that tears swelled up in my eyes.

Thank goodness I was palpating the fundus so I did not have to make eye contact with the pt. or CI at the time. After I was done and my CI left the room, I went behind the curtain and politely excused myself from the room. I then went to the BR and cried and got myself together.

So my advice is to go to the BR or a private corner and gather yourself together.

Maybe you can talk to a trusting co-worker about your concerns.

On another note: I'm sorry about your mom and hugs and prayers are sent your way.
