Harborview - Paying for Nursing School?

U.S.A. Washington

Published

I'm currently working on getting ER tech positions in a couple hospitals in Washington, and have a conditional offer from one. I currently work in the field as an EMT. With my overall goal being going into nursing, either in an ER or ICU/CCU, I figured moving into an ER tech position is a good way to gain hospital based experience. I was talking to someone that said that I should try and get hired at Harborview because after working for them they will pay for you to go to nursing school as long as you sign a contract saying you will work for them afterwards.

It sounds like an amazing deal to me, nursing school paid for AND work at the one of the best hospitals in the state? But it almost sounds to good to be true. I haven't been able to find anything online, so I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this program?

I am not exactly sure what the exact program is, but I know that Harborview is part of UW and that because they are a state school/hospital there is a tuition exemption program. I think (and I am not entirely sure) that they will pay for a certain number of credits per quarter. Hey rnave27,

I work for Harborview Medical Center and had a similar question when I started working there. I'm also heading off to nursing school in the coming year, UW being one of my choices. The official word is that once you begin to work for Harborview, you are a part of the UW group, but your benefits package is contingent upon the kind of staff you are. The levels are classified and professional (which are two a fancy ways of saying permanent staff) and non-classified (which is another way of saying temporary). The UW (i.e. "management") does allow for tuition exemption of 6 credits per quarter, but it's unclear about how long you'll need to be working there for to access this, and whether you're bonded after. As it turns out, I'll be heading up to the Benefits Office tomorrow to sort out of some affairs, so I'll be happy to address the question to them and get back to you.

In the meantime, here's a link with some information:

Any information you could find out would be awesome! It doesnt sound like the program that got described to me, but who knows.

Thanks for the replies.

The hospital I work at has a training fund for employees of 1+ yrs. They give you so much money based on your FTE. That's how I was able to go back to school. :)
