Handing out pre packaged meds on trip days

Published

In our camp in Massachusetts we use a prepackaged medication delivery system.

I am trying to determine who is allowed to hand out these packets to campers when off the premises for trip day. We can send an EMT-B or often a Unit Head, but would be great if we did not need to send the nurse and when we go to a Bowling Alley or Six Flags, we do not send a nurse anyway.

Thanks !

An RN can delegate medication administration to a counselor in NH. We just go over the med with them before they leave and make sure they understand.

Check your state's nurse practice act and the youth camp regulations. I was a school nurse in MA, and we could delegate meds for field trips to a teacher, so I imagine there is something similar in place for camps.

Thank you for your detailed answer. I have caled every agency, no one can give me an answer that I am comfortable with. The agency that governs nursing was adamant about only answering questions regarding Nurse Practice, not other workers...and each state differs. I wish there was something in writing.

I agree, this topic can be really frustrating!

The ACN has a practice guideline that might give you some reassurance. It is on their website, under resources.
