Hi All,
I am in an ADN program and I am currently on my Psych rotation (6 weeks). One of the projects we have to complete, in addition to attending an A.A. meeting, is to do a group project in which we have to present/teach something to the patients.
Can you give me ideas of what we should talk about? We have 30-45 minutes to work with. Any help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!

What about adverse effects alcohol has on pt who are prescribed psychiatric medication.
Thanks. That is a good one. Anyone else have ideas? It does not have to be alcohol related. I just want a nice variety to choose from.
THANK YOU!!!

What does mental health mean to you.

What is (pick a diagnosis i.e shiz. personality disorder, borderline disorder)
Pick a med ( did haldol in school as a commercial with us on a airplane it was a hoot)
anything that gets group participation
lots of things out there just be original and have fun with it. learning doesnt have to be boring.

the group I got the most positive feedback was one I did was dealing with stigma of mental illness and how to deal with people in the community. It can be hard to teach but there are some videos out there. On a completely differnt note I did a group on sexual dysfunction related to mental illness (meds and as part of the disease) that I was hesitate to do but went twice as long as scheduled because of all the questions I got.

I did medication compliance- basic stuff such as:
What if you think you have side effects?
What if you think you are better?
What if you run out of meds?
I also did dietary needs, such as not mixing certain foods with MAIOs, etc.

Are psyc was a 6 wk rotation and we had to do a group project as well. Yuck! We chose depression and broke down topics such as risks, meds, med management, hygiene, and stress management. We chose to do our project during morning group while all of the patients were together. We had a few visuals such as med organizer, med bottle with easy flip top (we had a lot of geriatric patients). We also did activities with them such as having them make a list of all support persons etc. Some other groups did projects such as different relaxation techniques (it was a hit). Good luck!!

Coping mechanisms. Keep their interest by doing some seated yoga and breathing exercises. I bet they won't forget your presentation when they are able to do something more than listen (and zone out:o ) Good luck
