Hi - just wondering if anyone has ever had a group interview? I applied for a nurse externship and we have a group interview before they offer us personal interviews. I'm not sure what to expect as far as how it's done or the type of questions. Anyone know?

Hi Nicole! I haven't been in a group interview, but we do them where I work. What we do is there is a group of people, and you introduce yourself one by one, and usually say something about why you are interested in the position. Its kind of like a regular interview, but they are pretty broad, and if you are selected then it gets more specific with the questions they ask you. I think ours usually last about an hour or so depending on how many people are there. It will probably vary with each company though. Good luck let us know how it goes!

I'm not a big fan of these unless they are also accompanied by personal interviews done by people experienced in the interview process. What they are attempting to do is involve the nursing staff in evaluating prospective employees. That's all fine and good because the people in the trenches will sometimes come up with some good questions to ask, but the questions they ask are often based on problems they've had with other employees in the past. Just be your charming self. It also gives you a chance to get a look at the people you are actually going to be working with which can be a plus. Most of the time you never get to see the faces or talk to the people you will work side by side with until the day you start work. Have questions ready. Ask things like how do you all get along and how do you handle disputes, if any. In a very tactful way, try to get them to talk about the real dirt that goes on between them back in the report room. The last thing you need is to walk into a lion's den where you will get eaten up by a bunch of clicky people acting like teenagers. Keep in mind that these nurses are going to go back to the unit where everyone else is going to ask them what their impression was of you. So, if you get hired, there is already going to be a first impression of you already out there.

Thanks! Hopefully this doesn't end up as bad as it sounds. I was able to talk with someone who was previously part of this externship and I am so nervous! The interviews each have 100 applicants; it's going to be very difficult to make an impression on the interviewers with that many people. Hopefully it goes well.
