Greek Mythology and Drugs?

Published

I've always been interested in nursing, but I find having interesting facts to go with drugs/hormones/whatever, helps me understand and remember them better!

For example, Atropine, is derived from Atropos in greek mythology. Atropos was one of the three fates, and decided how a person was going to die. I remember the drug as being potentionally deadly, and having a role in deciding the fate of cardiac arrest or pt in a life threatening stiuation.

Any other drugs you can think of that are derived from greek gods?

I really like this question but a quick Google search didn't get me many results. I did find out that morphine is named Morpheus, the god of dreams. Here is a link to a paper that has the etymology of a bunch of psychiatric terms: http://pb.rcpsych.org/cgi/reprint/21/12/781.pdf

This link has etymology of anatomy terms, the origin of muscle is neat: http://www.emory.edu/ANATOMY/AnatomyManual/Etymology.html
