Here it is. Sorry for the length, I tried to think of everything because I remember reading journals to prep for the CPNE and every little detail is helpful.
I know, it's hard to get a flow when you are working with a dummy, I know my blow up doll doesn't care that I keep stopping to check off my papers but I am sure to a patient it would be awkward. Usually what I do is I refer to my grid, complete one assessment and then start the next. It just seems so rigid though... I feel like I'm practicing lines?I am seriously, seriously thinking about doing a mock with Sheri. I can't afford to do the weekend workshop in August but she does mocks for $100 and I can drive up and back in one day. I dunno. I have two months to go!!
Appreciate you sharing your experience nursemomma11 soo much!!! :-)
I personally have spent a ton on just prepping! Not complaining just saying. We know how to do it. We just need repetitive practice i think. Its kinda the same when you precept for someone. Just go by your criticalelements and it will be ok. Arent you doing sheris? She does have a mock of a pcs situation. I was told a clipboard would just get in the way....it may work for others though.
They will allow a clipboard, but it will be really awkward to carry around because there aren't many places at all that you may set your paperwork. It just worked much better to fold mine in half long-ways and keep it in my pocket for quick reference.
Exactly what i was thinking of!! Thanks!!
I didn't want a lot of flipping back and forth so I put all of my mnemonics for 20 minute check, safety, mobility, fluid management on the fluid management page of the kardex packet. Then on the back of my packet I wrote my grid with AOC's and a few sections at the bottom just so I wouldn't forget anything. I attached a sample for you.
Awesome! But i have to ask what are the words written in the margins? And you didnt use that exact paper did you?? Im appreciating your help so much.

Those are my mnemonics:
"scab" for safety
S - siderails up
C - call bell in reach
A - Apply brake to bed
B - Bed in low position
"I think of a cow in a tie died shirt having a post traumatic stress disorder breakdown" for 20 minute check.
H - Handwash
I - Introduce myself & CE
P - Purpose, tell pt. why I am here
P - Put on gloves
I - Id pt.
C - check Iv Site
O - off gloves
W - wash hands
P - Pinch turgor or ask Can I see your tongue?
T - Tubing check - no kinks or air
S - Solution - record on form
D - Drip rate - record on form
Iv- Voice the amount left hanging in the bag
"Boil water" for fluid management
B - Be sure to inform the pt. you will be counting I & O
O - Observe all fluids at the bedside - Now would be a good time to refill pt.'s glass so you know where you started
I - Instruct use of urinal or toilet hat
L - Look at parenteral sources - tube feeding, IV solution and medications
"Lab Sim." for mobility
L - Level of Mobility
A - Assistive Devices / Abnormalities in gait.
B - Balance - Ask the pt. if he or she feels steady
S - Slippers or shoes
M - Move pt. by supporting weak areas.
No I didn't use this exact paper. They keep everything you write on for their records. I printed this one out of the study guide and filled it in just like I did in my planning phase, then scanned it so I could post it on here. In the real PCS, you will be writing in those boxes as you do the things it is asking for.

I recommend doing anything through Sheri! If it weren't for her online workshop, I would have been totally lost throughout this whole thing!
Nursemomma11, first CONGRATS!! on your pass and your new status change to GN. I just finished reading thru your journal and I got chills just thinking about how great you must have felt when they told you that you passed. Good for you, I am so jealous, LOL. Hopefully that will be me by the end of the year. Congratulations, again!

Thank you again!! The photos really helped. I have been setting my grid up in squares but I really like how you did it better!! I really appreciate all your advice :-)
