I am getting ready to do my practicum for my graduate school program (masters in nursing education). I need to develop a project in which I develop education for either nurses, students, or patients. I am in ob and interested in doing something in the maternity field. I would love to see what others have done for these kinds of projects, I really have no clue where to begin. I would like to do something practical, something I can use again, like maybe developing CEU credits, or something that I can teach when I graduate.
What have other nursing educators done for their projects in graduate school?

I do not know your time frame, but I WISH every student in your field would be required to complete a CNE application for some professional organization and get it approved. It costs money, but the cost could be covered by your employer or another entity. If that is not an option, consider downloading an application for such an activity and developing the event in the required format. They are based on nursing education standards.
As for topics: can you do a needs assessment first? Ask a few nurses what they would consider a gap in knowledge or skill. We are dealing with more gestational diabetes - that is a topic that covers both mom and baby. Good luck with your project.
I would love to get my CNE certification, however the NLN only offers this to full time faculty. This is unfortunate and leaves out a large majority of adjunct faculty members. Other specialities allow a certain amount of hours, which seems more fair, I would like this to be the requirement.
I think a needs assessment is a great idea, I did post on the ob/gyn area here, but haven't gotten a response yet. I hope to get some ideas here because I think you're right, I would like some needs ideas first before doing all the work and then finding out it's not really needed or wanted.

I know you requested something in the maternity field, but I did mine on medication error prevention. I presented my teaching project to first year nursing students and talked about why medication errors occur and what nurses can do every day to prevent them. I had a blast.
Do you work in the maternity field? How about finding a nurse who works in OB and see what they think nurses/students/patients need education on?
Good luck!
