Nursing Writing Opportunities Websites
Hi everyone: I'm going to post on the entrepreneur threads too, but I know that someone had posted a link to a site that had legit nursing writing positions. I had looked up several that I liked. They ranged from writing for blogs and magazines to writing flash cards, creating and teaching CEU courses, writing handouts for companies, ghostwriting, brochures, etc. Does anyone know about a site like that? I've looked through page after page on google and haven't found the site I'm looking for, so I thought I'd come back and try here! Thanks!

I canNOT throw in the towel on these 3 students
Oh, I was also going to suggest that maybe they can find some kind of internship, whether formal or informal where they can be putting some of this information into practice. I know some of my students have improved DRASTICALLY when they work somewhere and are able to put theory, lecture, and clinical all into one picture. They could work as a unit sectretary (or shadow one), getting used to entering orders,etc...or maybe help out in a doctors office....or outpatient clinic over the summer...even if for a few hours, it might really help things "click"...if you're lucky enough to be around research centers (for example, we have Hershey Med), you might be able to get them to tag along with one of the research students and help with some of that work...yes, all of that is extra work, but I do think it helps..some students, especially my older, adult students don't do well if they can't put it "all together"...it's one of the reasons, I'm thinking of offering some off-campus, possibly online classes, like test-taking strategies, studying for NCLEX, tutoring, time management, etc...all specifically designed for nursing students (because the general ones don't hit the stressors and specific problems the nursing students have)....unfortunately our school cut back on many of these programs and don't want to pay to have us do it, but I think if I kept it inexpensive, it would greatly benefit the students....and many of them really can do it, it's just getting through the tests, the test anxiety, the theory, etc...but I mostly I know which ones are going to make good nurses and it's not always the ones getting A's and B's in class..sometimes the one's struggling in class are awesome on the clinical floor and just need some extra confidence, help with studying, sometimes ADHD techniques for adults, etc....Good luck! Let us know what works/doesn't work...

I canNOT throw in the towel on these 3 students
That's a tough one...it sounds like you have already gone above and beyond what other instructors would do...I would explain the situation in detail to the students and explain how much you're putting into it, and how you expect them to do the same and then some...I'm sure there are some online groups/tutoring they can participate in....I hope it works out

How to Become Online Nursing Instructor
University of Phoenix...MSN/nurse educator. I had hoped to finish this spring, but had to take a few breaks due to family illness issues, which is one of the big benefits to UOP. Ideally, I would continue teaching 2 days per week as an adjunct, which I am doing now, and find a job teaching online. I'd like to add in writing/teaching courses, such as CEU's and workshops. This allows me to do everything I like at one time and provide the flexibility I need with my family.

Any educators teaching NCLEX review courses?
I know it's been discussed before, both in this section and the entrepreneur section, but I haven't seen any discussion in months. Our school used to have the state student nursing association come at the end of each term and have someone offer NCLEX courses (not mandatory, extra fee). I know Kaplan and a few other places also offer them, but the students who have taken them aren't happy, say they are too much and aren't what they feel they need. For one of my school projects, we talked about and designed a NCLEX course class, which would be an independent course. I was wondering how many other educators were teaching these? If so, how does it work? Is it part of your school or independent? I'm worried about the conflict of interest issue. How much do you charge and how many hours/days is your course? I did a needs assessment and found there was a definite need and students did not want to just read a book or do an online study course, nor did they want to do Kaplan. So I'd like to further investigate this, however, I don't want to reinvent the wheel either. I don't even know, maybe there's a "how to" book out there? Or some modules or info on starting this? Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

How to Become Online Nursing Instructor
I'm interested in this too. I already teach clinicals 2 days per week plus teach in the lab in an ADN program. I teach ob/postpartum right now, but have taught med/surg, GI before. I would love to teach online, but so far all the programs I've contacted want some kind of doctorate degree, either finished or in progress. I'm almost finished my Masters, so I thought I'd be able to teach in an ADN or bridge online program, but haven't found any. By the way, when I click on the previous link,it just brings me back to the nursing educator page, not sure why it's not working for me?

Becoming a Ceus Provider
Are you going to be teaching the courses? And writing them? I have been looking into writing the courses and as part of my masters program I am developing a CEU course on genetic diseases in the Amish population, so I've done quite a bit of research on how to qualify and obtain CEU credits for the nurses who will take my course. I am also a lactation consultant and am in the process of developing 15 LCERP's for our hospital as a trial run for the unit where I teach as part of another project (LCERPS are like CEU's for Lactation consultants). I'm interested in learning more about developing and teaching CEU courses. I have an interest in developing ones that are multi-media; I feel we are not using technology near as much as we could and with so many different kinds of learners out there and wonderful technology, we are missing the boat! I'd love to hear about your plan to teach, what you come up with, and any information you can share. I have talked on the other forums about my plans, I teach 2 days per week, but need to also supplement that income and have been looking for something flexible. Teaching and writing are two things I already do and love!

Can I really expect to be hired with just a Masters?
In my area, PA, you can work as an adjunct clinical instructor with just a masters, but it's difficult to get a full time position without a doctorate. Once you've worked as an adjunct for a few years, you can get hired by the community colleges sometimes, but there is more competition for that right now. I've been teaching for several years with my bachelors and am just now finishing my masters. I love teaching, but can't really work and pursue a doctorate right now due to family commitments. I have been looking for something online to teach in addition to the 2 days per week of clinicals that I do. And I've been thinking about trying my hand at writing CEU courses. Or possibly teaching NCLEX. I need to add something to my part time adjunct position, but need something somewhat flexible at this point.

The "nurse in the family" business
How do you get started in doing private case management? The only case managers I've worked with are ones who are paid by the insurance companies or hospitals/facilities? What are some companies that are hiring case managers? I think this is a growing field and there is a definite need. It would save tons of money to have more private case managers, I would love to do this, just have no idea how to start. I already do it off the record for my maternity patients, by going with them to consults, referrals, f/u's, etc. It would be nice to find a company that might actually pay me to do it!

Does the nursing profession really want to eliminate the nurse faculty shortage?
In my area (central PA) we always have adjunct facult positions for several colleges, both community and other. I have to think it's your area. There are at least 3 full time positions in my area, and probably 6-7 in another hours drive. You might need to consider a longer drive, an online position, or taking something part time to get your foot in the door. The schools around here hire BSN's who enroll in a MSN program. Is there a big pay difference in areas? Maybe we all just work for peanuts around here, I know we aren't making much more than the floor nurses right now...

How much does a Clinical Instructor make a year?
In my area, clinical instructors make about 30/hour, although it is salary based. Since most work only 2-3 days per week, and have extra hours involved such as grading papers, it probably comes to about 25/hour. We are hired and have a contract one semester at a time. So there's no guarantee of employment. However, it's a great way to make extra money and break into the education field. I love it and love the hours. With children at home and a sick husband, it's been a great way to bring in extra income without the burden of a full time position and I am off holidays, weekends, christmas break, etc. I've been looking around trying to find some salary examples for full time professors/instructors for a masters degree report. I've been surprised how little is out there, it's like a closely guarded secret. I am writing a 5 year plan for my school and need more information on salaries, if anyone has something. It's frustrating not to be able to find the information, it's taking me longer to do that then it will to write the paper!

Assignment sheets
I am looking for examples of different kinds of assignment sheets for postpartum.I teach RN students and need to get them better organized. I know most of the hospitals now have some kind of assignment sheets for their nurses. When I worked the floor,I came up with my own system, folding paper and making columns. Does anyone have one they could share? Basically, I want one that has all the information they would need for report, along with a way to organize themselves throughout the shift. Thanks!

Who writes CEU courses? Resources?
In my research, it looks like if I want to receive approval for a CEU course, I need to be part of an approved or accredited agency/company. Is that true? I sent an email to try to get clarification, but I am doing this as a student right now and won't be able to get approval from my school. I had also hoped to develop more courses and hopefully develop that into some extra income, but I don't understand how to do that if I need to be part of a company or agency that is accredited.
