NTP bases??

Actually, Wilford Hall will still be Wilford Hall - as a massive outpatient center. We already are SAMMC - we're SAMMC South, and BAMC is SAMMC North. SAMMC North will become the inpatient center, and SAMMC South will be all the clinics. The architectural drawings of this place are amazing!

carolinapooh you were correct after reading more carefully i realized the list i posted were bases that have inpatient care were necp new grads can be stationed for their first pds. after more careful research i was able to track this down the following dated 9 mar 2010:

the usaf nurse transition program (ntp) is a clinical training program for nurses with less than 12 months acute care experience. the course is designed to facilitate the transition of novice nurses into the roles of air force nurse corps officers. the nurse transition program provides students the opportunity to gain experience and competence in direct patient care under the supervision of a nurse preceptor. the course is 11 weeks for the military sites and 9 weeks in length for the civilians sites.

the course is currently hosted at the following 10 sites:

96th medical group - eglin afb

81st medical group - keesler afb

59th medical group - lackland afb

60th medical group - travis afb

88th medical group - wright-patterson afb

3rd medical group, elmendorf afb

99th medical group - nellis afb

landstuhl regional medical center, germany

university hospital, cincinnati oh

scottsdale health care, scottsdale az

the first 5 days are classroom instruction and includes hospital inprocessing. clinical rotation one focuses on skills acquisition. the new nurse works with a preceptor whose primary purpose is to train, educate and mentor while the nurse is on that unit. clinical rotation two focuses on team leading. the ntp student must effectively demonstrate the ability to manage a team of patients in order to graduate from the course.

That list still seems inaccurate to me, mostly because of where I hear people going on this board. And I still know four RNs who went to Eglin straight from COT, but came to Lackland TDY for NTP (while the DoD will spend money like it's water, the AF is notoriously tight when it comes to TDY money). I also don't believe they're having it anywhere overseas (I can't imagine the expense involved) - but since the incoming COT classes seem to be huge this could be changing this fiscal year. I'll ask our education office and see if I can get better information.

It bugs me that it doesn't say "59th Medical Wing" - we're the only independently operating medical wing in the Air Force - our two-starred commander is a physician, not a pilot! In a lot of ways that makes life easier for us.

Unless something has changed in the last few months Eglin AFB does host NTP students. I work with two RNs that got here about six months ago from NTP there. They both loved it and want to be stationed there down the road.

How strange, then, that they'd TDY RNs to Lackland who are actually stationed at Eglin - unusually poor planning on the AF's part - someone at Randolph screwed up big time, I guess. :)

As cheap as the AF is, I often wonder who is planning this stuff because they have no financial savvy. For instance, I recently went TDY to Wichita Falls (how exciting, right?) and when I received information from the "dis-Orderly Room" the instructions said something like "it may be cheaper to fly to Dallas and rent a car than it would be to fly directly to CASF". Okay then, so my colleague and I went that route because it was only $500 each rather than fly directly to Wichita Falls which would have been about $1500 each--net savings of about $2000 for the AF. Well I didn't pay attention to my orders (shame on me for that) and of course there was no indication for a rental car. Guess who is paying for the rental car now? I'm irritated but I realize that I should have read my orders more carefully. The lesson I have learned: the AF isn't about making sense, it's about making it happen.

That's true - you do hear stuff like that all the time.

Yeah, that place is like a black hole. I went to CASF there, which, by the way, isn't doing me any good since I'm no longer deploying. I'll be so happy when the schoolhouse moves to San Antonio. That will make for a much more enjoyable TDY!
