Guaranteed base before saying "I do"?

Has anyone joined the AF nurse corp and had a guaranteed base before they came in?

This will be your one and only chance to really get your pick! You have say so when you move, but the needs of the Air Force always come first. On your list of bases that you want to go to only put down the one(s) you absolutely want to go to, and if you get something else tell them you're not coming in.

There are big differences in coming as an officer vs. enlisted.

You found out before you moved but did you find out before you deceided to join? For example one would join if there first duty station was.....

That being said - of course the real reason one wants to join is to serve your country.

They aren't going to make it that easy for you. You will know your base, rank etc. before you have to finalize everything, but they are going to make you do a ton of paperwork before they will get to the base part.

What is your nursing speciality? and What base are you interested in?

The Army will give you a choice of three duty stations. You will know what you recieved before you accept you commission. The Army,AirForce and Navy all have the same programs. The only difference right now is that the ARMY is offering $29,323 in Loan Repayment. Congress did not authorize the money for the other two branches. The army also has a Course gurantee program the allows you to pick a specialty from critical care, Psych,OB and OR Nursing. I think that the courses are 16 weeks long and you get paid for the training.

This may be obvious, but from my experience in the military (Navy) and with others in the same and differernt branches, get any guarantees in black and white. Oh, and don't forget to read the fine print that usually makes some sort of "in case of..." statement. They aren't always too bad, but please read every word before you put a pen to anything!

That being said, some of the bennies that you won't find in the civilian world are travel, lots of flexibility within your command (but not at all duty assignments) and too many little things to mention like 30 days paid vacation per year, sick days that don't counta against that, understatnding and flexibilty when personal things arise (at my commands I never had touble anyway), etc, etc. Good Luck!

Your assignment will be in your contract when you sign it.

We don't have sick days in the military. I was off for 7 months fighting breast cancer. I WON. I did not lose a days pay. Nor did I have to use any vacation time. And I don't even know what a hospital bill looks like.
